"Next Level Thinking"

Developing a Future Course for Your Business

Am I advocating that you should simply do this planning to obtain more money? No. Maybe your goal is to give more money to charity. Whatever it is, write it down. I am confident that you will be much more pleased with the results you obtain if they are in line with what you desire: Think it through and write it down.

Good Times Require Discipline, Too!

Former Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi stated, “Winning is not a sometime thing – it’s an all-the-time thing.” We are currently facing a difficult situation in the dairy industry today. As I write this column, we are enjoying some higher milk prices. However, by the time you read this article, we could very well be seeing lower prices again. While I hope that is not the case, it is always a possibility.

“What would Albert Einstein do?”

I think you’ll agree that Albert Einstein was a very intelligent person. However, as the scientist who developed the Theory of Relativity, most of us would not have looked to him for advice in the area of strategic management or life philosophy. While that may, for the most part, be a reasonable assumption, I’d like to review one of his quotes because I believe it contains some very powerful advice for us today.

The Virtues of Speed

For a fascinating example of speed and action combined, just watch what happens in the pits at an Indy car race. As outlined in Fast Company’s book “The Rules of Business,” there are four primary rules that guide both the driver and his pit crew in their respective roles.

‘There Is No Try…Only Do or Do Not’

I have heard the phrase “we can’t” too many times. Getting Yourself on the Right Team!

The managers on the A Team have a definite plan that they follow very closely. Of course, they adjust their path occasionally, but for the most part they stick to their plan. Why? They do so simply because they spent a lot of valuable time with their key advisers developing this plan that will take them closer to their desired objectives. Does the B Team have a plan? Certainly. They have even considered getting it out of the file drawer to review it once in a while…

“Building a World Class Team!”

I attended a Leadership Conference at Duke University and was fortunate to hear a keynote address delivered by Duke’s Head Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski entitled “Building a World Class Team.” His message centered around his experiences developing the USA Basketball Team that competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. He outlined what he felt are the primary Keys to Positive Leadership and Sound Teamwork.

What is Your Level of Commitment?

No one ever said that planning was easy, but it is rewarding. Work hard to stay on course with your plan and always know where you are with respect to that plan. There is no alternative, other than to be like the warehouse worker, who, when asked how long he had worked at his current job, replied, “Ever since they threatened to fire me…” Staying on course with your plan will lend itself to far superior results.
