I recently heard an excellent podcast by Tyler Dickerhoof, entitled “Do People Trust You?” He was talking with Dr. Abbie Marano, Psychologist and Author of “The Upper Hand.”

During their discussion, Dr. Marano stated, “ Trust is about vulnerability. It might be emotional, financial, or informational. It’s about being a safe person where others feel they won’t be exploited.” Wow, I thought, do I consistently build trust with my Clients and Family Members?

They went on to talk about Dr. John Maxwell and how he was confronted in Romania when he was there to speak about “Leadership.” His translator explained that leaders in Romania were typically not trusted, simply because they have previously taken from people. In essence, being a leader there was not considered a noble aspiration…

Tyler went on to explain that recent Pew Research showed that only 34% believe that most people can be trusted. He added, “I know trust was low, but wow. Work with five other people, and these stats indicate only 1 or 2 think you can be trusted.” “Building trust is not about quick wins but about nurturing long-term relationships. It’s about being trustworthy and deserving to be in the room, not just appearing trustworthy.”

So, how do we build trust with others, especially if they have previously taken advantage of us at some point? Here are four steps from Dan Sullivan, Co-Founder of The Strategic Coach. He calls them “The Referability Habits.”

1.)   Show up on time.

2.)   Do what you say.

3.)   Finish what you start.

4.)   Say please and thank you.

Dan goes on to state; “These four habits, continually practiced and reinforced, increase your referability. You become someone whom more and more people know they can count on. They automatically want to recommend you.”

Think about someone you really trust. They likely have these very characteristics. This is great advice for all of us.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
