What Have You Done for Me Lately?
You may find the title listed above to be sort of strange… Or interesting? Or antagonistic? However, I really intended for it to be “stimulating” for you and your thought process. In essence, if your Annual Goals could speak, would this be a question that they would be asking you?
Let’s face it. By the time you are reading this, we will be nearly half way through the current year. With that in mind, have you reviewed your overall business & personal objectives you set for this year? Oh, and for those of you who forgot to do so (and I know you are out there…), please do yourself a huge favor and establish some today for the rest of the year. Trust me. You won’t regret doing so.
For those of you who did establish some objectives, would they be asking you this question? Are you measuring your Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to check your progress? Remember, as outlined in a prior article and suggested by my Business Coach Dan Sullivan of the Strategic Coach:
“If you can measure it, you can understand it.
If you can understand it, you can control it.
If you can control it, you can improve it.”
You’ve probably heard about the person who set some goals, put their sheet in a desk drawer, and then magically reached them over the next five years. However, I suggest that you measure your results more regularly, make adjustments in your course of action, and enjoy getting them completed sooner.
With that in mind, set a regular time to consistently check your progress (e.g. monthly or quarterly) and get those dates on your calendar. Why? Otherwise you may never actually check them. In fact, I make it a point to literally get away from my normal setting twice per year to review my progress and to set new objectives for my business. For some, this might sound radical, but I’ve found that using this time in a disciplined manner has paid huge dividends.
Ultimately, you must decide what works best for you. Maybe it’s just getting away to a local coffee shop for an afternoon. Regardless, please don’t wait too long. It’s far better to pursue a big Goal, than to leave your outcome to pure luck. You are all in the first year of the rest of your lives. Why not make it as great as possible?
