Yes, You Can!

I recently received an e-mail from a reader of one of my previous blogs, expressing his concern that he wasn’t quite sure that he could get his business where he wanted to take it in the future. After describing the situation with his current lender and the various cash flow challenges he was having, he asked me if I thought there was any possibility for him to move forward.

Now, I didn’t have all of his business details, but I reminded him of what Henry Ford had said: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t accomplish something, you’re probably correct.” My whole point was that if you want something badly enough and you know “Why” you want it, you can figure out how to get it done!

My recommendations to Clients are not based upon theoretical concepts. They are literally based upon real life, field tested ideas that have been proven to work under various circumstances. I still remember the fallout in the dairy industry in 2009 with its low prices, but I also remember the joy expressed by a new Client, who after losing $2 Million in 2009, made a small profit in 2010. Would that have happened if he’d been convinced there was no way to turn things around in 2010? No. Instead, we focused on what items we could control, made some solid progress the next year and then went on to bigger & better results over the next several years with the aid of a new lender.

Did we know at the start, that things would turn out exactly like they did? Of course not! Things change over time. However, as Viktor Frankl points out in his book Man’s Search for Meaning (Have you read it yet? If not, I suggest you get a copy & do so.), achieving survival must come first. Realize that your old life is over. It’s a different world now. Then, and only then, can you move on to additional growth & success in your business.

Develop a plan for success, i.e. know where you want to go. Recognize that there will be obstacles to your goals, but if you know “Why” you are doing something, the “How” of overcoming these challenges will be so much easier. Every journey begins with the first step. One question: What is your initial step? I’d encourage you to start with that first step and then the next one and so on… Before you know it, you’ll be at the finish line!

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
